Alan Broadbent. M.I.T.A.I, M.S.O.E, M.I.R.T.E, EngTech. Collision Scene Investigator
Mr. Alan Broadbent is an Apprentice Trained Motor Vehicle Technician
and Collision Investigator. Having over 40 year’s
experience in the inspection and testing of motor vehicles and over 15 year’s experience in the forensic
investigations of road collisions.
Alan served as a Police Constable with West Yorkshire Police for 26 years during which time he worked on mobile
patrol and Road Traffic patrol where he passed training courses in Road Traffic law, Heavy Goods Vehicle law, HGV driver’s
hour’s law, Tachograph Operation, Hazardous Chemicals Legislation and Major Incident Handling. For a period in excess of
10 years he was employed as a Collision Investigator with West Yorkshire Police Collision Investigation Unit based at Wakefield.
As part of his role of Collision Investigator he has personally investigated 86 fatal collisions, 284 potentially
fatal collisions and assisted in the investigations of approximately 450 more. He has examined approximately 600 vehicles of
all types including cars, goods vehicles, mobile cranes, fork-lift trucks, plant and machinery.
He has received a number of commendations for his investigations. He has considerable experience in presenting his
evidence at Magistrates, Crown and H.M. Coroners Courts and has been accepted in all of them as an Expert Witness for over 10 years.
Alan was also responsible for the training and development of Collision Investigators, being required to train personnel to
attain the standards of an expert witness in the field of Collision Investigation and Forensic Vehicle Examination.
As part of his role as Collision Investigator he has given presentations and lectures on the subject. The target groups
include Secondary School Students, City and Guilds Course Students, the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, various branches
of the Institute of Advanced Motorists and various branches of the Approved Driving Instructors Association around West Yorkshire plus
groups within West Yorkshire Police such as the Crime Division, Major Collision Enquiry Team and Homicide and Major Enquiry Team.
Alan is a Member of the Institute of Traffic Accident Investigators; Member of the Society of Operations Engineers; Member of the
Institute of Road Transport Engineers and is registered with the Engineering Council as an Engineering Technician.
